Strand Theatre project gets $100K grant

The Strand Theatre received $100,000 from the Wachovia Foundation on Wednesday for the renovation of the former movie hall on the Marietta Square. Kendall Alley, Atlanta Regional President of Wachovia, said the bank supports projects like the Strand that promote community redevelopment. The donation was made in honor of former Cobb County Commission Chair Earl Smith who heads the fund-raising group, Friends of the Strand.

In November, a group of community leaders pledged $500,000 to name the theater the Earl Smith Strand Theatre if another $500,000 is raised by June 1. With Wachovia's donation, $155,000 has been raised for the Smith tribute. Earl Reece, executive director of the Strand, isn't worried about meeting the goal."I have no doubt that we will reach our deadline," Reece said. "As this project continues to take shape, more people are jumping on board."

Interior work started last summer in the 1935 art deco theater and should kick into high gear, Reece said, after the roof is finished next week.The fund-raising group has raised $3.1 million towards a goal of $4.5 million to open the renovated theater by late fall.
