Mayerzy Pancreatic Cancer Foundation

In America,
one in three women, and one in two men will be diagnosed with cancer
in their lifetime.
Pancreatic cancer is the 4th leading cause of cancer
death in the United States. It is the 3rd leading cause of cancer
death among 40-59 year old men.
The MAYPCF was established by Robert Yerzy and his family to
honor their mother’s courageous battle with pancreatic cancer by
celebrating her unique appreciation of Community Building
Celebrations, and the Arts & Music! "My mother was a truly beautiful
person. Watching her courageous battle with pancreatic cancer made
me aware of how brutal this disease is and how helpless one can feel
when trying to combat its symptoms", said Yerzy. "Unfortunately by
the time you are diagnosed with this death sentence of a cancer,
odds are that your vital organs have been compromised systemically
and spreads quickly, too quickly" remarked Yerzy.
The WellStar Foundation is the philanthropic arm
of WellStar Health System, a not-for-profit healthcare System
serving owned by the community. The vision of WellStar Health
System is to deliver world class healthcare through our hospitals,
physicians and services. WellStar Health System includes Cobb,
Douglas, Kennestone, Paulding and Windy Hill hospitals; WellStar
Physicians Group; Urgent Care Centers; Health Place; Homecare;
Hospice; Atherton Place; and WellStar Foundation. For more
information, call (770) 956-STAR or visit
www.wellstar.org.
Beginning February 11, 2008, the
Mary Ann Yerzy Pancreatic Cancer Foundation, Inc .501C3 (MAYPCF),
in conjunction with WellStar Foundation, is hosting a series
of fundraisers to further educate, and fund much needed research and
awareness for Pancreatic Cancer.
The first fundraiser, on February
11th at the 3 Bears Café in Marietta located on the
Marietta Historic Square, 7 pm to 9 pm, features " Luscious
Love Lines, A Romantic Evening of Poetry"
presented by local artists.
In attendance to support and
provide educational awareness will be a WellStar Foundation cancer
specialist, Dr. Robert Hermann, who will present some
interesting facts with regards to this cancer and what strides are
being made to arrest it locally and nationwide.
According to the American Cancer
Society, the rates of pancreatic cancer have dropped slightly in men
and women over the past 15-25 years.
For all stages of pancreatic cancer combined, the five year survival
rate is only 5%; the lowest survival rate of all major cancers.
